Let’s Talk Retinol

Come our mid 20’s our skin cellular turnover starts to slow down.   We don’t notice it then…we notice it gradually. The problem is though, we feel like it happens over night!

Our bigger question is how do we boost that cellular turnover to increase our collagen production and give our skin that glow?

The answer to begin is RETINOL.  This lovely topical derivative of Vitamin A can come across scary if used incorrectly before.  Retinol can be purchased without a prescription, so don’t get it confused with a lot stronger product called Retin-A (a pure form of retinoic acid), that requires a prescription.

The higher the percentage of Retinol, the stronger it is.  If you are new to using a Retinol we want to start low and slow.  Rushing the use will have you quitting before you see the results.  So patience is key with this product. Trust us though, it’s worth the patience.

The lowest Retinol we have at our disposal is a 0.1% Retinol for around the eyes, combine this with a morning Alumineye cream, you are tackling those crows feet, thinning skin, and lost elasticity.  Eyes are great to show your life experience but not your age, this power duo helps you with that.

Moderate Retinol is where I suggest most people start for the whole face, and that is any percentage from 0.04%-0.25%.  To start we suggest using twice a week for two weeks, then 3 times a week for 2 weeks, from that point is there no sensitivity, you can move your way up to nightly.

High level Retinol is 0.5%-1%.  When you prep your skin properly you will be able to tolerate this percentage with ease.  And oh baby, once you are able to tolerate this level, you see DRAMATIC changes in your skin after a weeks use.

Like we said before though, low and slow is best so that you ensure you tolerate the Retinol on your skin.

So when do we start?

Experts agree that the ideal age to introduce retinol into your skin care regimen can be as early as 25.  This is because around 25 is when your skin’s collagen and elastin production starts to slow down.

Does it mean that if we didn’t start at 25 we should just give up? NO NO NO!!  Your skin is your largest organ, constantly breathing and regenerating. Helping your dermis get the much needed ingredients it needs is always a good idea.  The biggest guessing game is finding the correct concentration of ingredients your specific skin needs. Once you figure that out, your glowing skin possibilities are endless!

Last but not least, we want you to be aware of side effects and how to spot them.  Sensitivity will have a few people with redness and dry/flaky skin. This is why we suggest low and slow as you begin your retinol journey.

Always ensure to wash your face again in the morning to remove any excess retinol from the night before.  Retinol has you more sensitive to UV rays, so make sure we add a broad spectrum sunscreen to the morning routine.
